Taylor Swift has released her new album and the penultimate song appears to contain several references to football and her boyfriend Travis Kelce.
“The Alchemy,” the 15th track on “The Tortured Poets Department,” went viral in the minutes following the album’s midnight release
On the bridge of the song, the references to Kelce are the most obvious.
“Chiefs sang because they said / There was no chance / Trying to be the best in the league / Where’s the trophy? / He just comes running to me’
Then the chorus begins: ‘Touch down / Call up the amateurs and remove them from the team / Throw away the clowns, take the crown, baby, I’m the one you gotta beat / ‘Cause the mark on your heart said it’s still is reserved for me / Honestly, who are we to fight alchemy?’
Other parts of the song refer to ‘blokes warm'[ing] the banks’.
The lyrics in Taylor Swift’s new song ‘The Alchemy’ are references to Travis Kelce
It’s a slow song that’s clearly about the man in her life, with whom she’s been publicly dating since September 2023 — when she went to her first Kansas City Chiefs game against the Chicago Bears.
But fans may have been tipped off to the song’s content long before the album’s release.
On Thursday, claims began circulating that Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, had been leaked a day earlier, prompting Swifties to get an early listen and think at least one song is about Kelce.
‘The Alchemy’ apparently contains several references that fans have interpreted as being about Kansas City Chiefs star Kelce.

Another said: ‘There’s one lovely surprise: The Alchemy is about Travis!
“References touchdowns, teammates, trophies and how they had an instant connection that they couldn’t resist.”
The lyrics refer to, among other things, ‘Chiefs chanting’, ‘touch downs’ and ‘trophies’
It is the penultimate song on her latest released album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’
The couple has been publicly dating since September, when Swift went to a Chiefs game
Another fan responded to a broader discussion about the record by saying, “I also think the alchemy is about Travis. It fits perfectly.’
Speaking about the upcoming release in February, while preparing for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Kelce said he heard some of the songs on Swift’s latest release.
“I heard about it and yeah, it’s unbelievable,” he told reporters. “I can’t wait for her to shake up the world when it finally comes crashing down.”
Although Swift wrote her first song about her boyfriend, it’s not the first time she sang about him.
During her Eras Tour stop in Argentina last fall, with Travis in attendance, she changed the lyrics in her song “Karma” and said, “Karma is the Chiefs guy, coming straight to me.”
