Taylor Swift has revealed that she is ignoring “weird rumours” about her relationship with boyfriend Joe Alwyn, whom she rarely speaks of.
The 32-year-old singer, whose first track on her upcoming album will be called Midnights Lavender Haze, explained that she first heard the phrase while watching AMC’s Mad Men and loved its “really beautiful” meaning.
She explained in a reel posted to Instagram on Thursday: “I came across the phrase Lavender Haze while watching Mad Men, and I looked it up because I thought it sounded cool.
‘We need to protect the real stuff’: Taylor Swift has revealed she’s ignoring ‘weird rumours’ about her relationship with boyfriend Joe Alwyn, whom she rarely talks about
And it turns out it’s a common phrase used in the ’50s where they would just describe being in love.
“If you were in the lavender mist, it meant you were in that all-encompassing love glow, and I really loved that.”
Taylor then got more specific, suggesting that the song was inspired by her six-year relationship with the 31-year-old and how they “dodge” speculation about their romance in order to “protect the real stuff.”
Couple: Taylor has been in a relationship with Joe for six years (pictured together in 2019)
She added: “I think a lot of people are dealing with this now, not just as ‘public figures’, because we live in the age of social media. And when the world finds out that you’re in love with someone, they start thinking about it.
“Like my six-year relationship, we’ve had to dodge weird rumors and gossip, and we just ignore it.
“And so this song is kind of about ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff.”
In her caption, the Grammy winner wrote: “Tonight we mayhem til the morning! AND release vinyls with photos signed on them on my site! It’s going to be a wild ride.’

Taylor’s Instagram post came shortly after the final episode of her TikTok series Midnights Mayhem with Me, in which the Bad Blood hitmaker reveals the names of the songs that will be featured on her new album.
Taylor spun a bingo cage of numbered balls and said in the clip, “The tension is palpable.”
After number one came out, she announced, “Track one is called Lavender Haze.”
Coming soon: There are 13 tracks for every sleepless night, although an exclusive edition of Target includes three bonus tracks. Midnights comes out on October 21
Other songs she has revealed so far are Midnight Rain, Question… ?), Vigilante S**t), Mastermind, Maroon and Anti-Hero.
Taylor previously described the album as a collection of songs based on 13 sleepless nights over the years, during which she got up to write lyrics.
Announcing the new project, she wrote in an online statement: ‘This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through horrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace on and the demons we face.
“For all of us who toss and turn and have decided to leave the lanterns on and start looking – in the hope that maybe we’ll meet when the clock strikes twelve.”
