Sydney Harbour boat fire: Massive boat fire breaks out aboard vessel as large plume of black smoke rises above the water

A fire that engulfed a large cruiser in Sydney Harbor has been extinguished by firefighters.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded to a triple-0 call and raced to the Birkenhead Marina in Drummoyne in Sydney’s west at 10.06am on Saturday after large plumes of black smoke billowed from a drifting cruiser.

Five trucks and 18 firefighters arrived at 10:12 a.m. and quickly worked to extinguish the flames.

Witnesses reported that thick black smoke was visible for several kilometers around the port.

A dock worker who suffered smoke inhalation was treated at the scene by paramedics and has since been cleared.

Two firefighters were sent onto the water to tackle the boat at close range, one on a NSW Ports Authority tugboat and the other on a police vessel.

Another three handlines worked from the shore to extinguish the flames.

The crew had the fire under control by 11 a.m. before the cruiser was moved to the west side of the marina for complete extinguishment.

Specialist hazmat technicians are expected to inspect the boat once there is no longer any danger on board.

No one was aboard the cruiser at the time the fire broke out and it is unknown if the owners were present at the marina during the fire.
