A BMW driver who fatally struck a 30-year-old woman in what witnesses described as a “horrific” accident is being investigated for possible speeding offences.
The 38-year-old man collided with the woman on the Esplanade in Surfers Paradise around 3.30pm on Thursday.
Paramedics arrived at the scene at Trickett Street and the woman, who Gold Coast Bulletin It was reported that she was a foreigner living in Surfers Paradise. She was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital but died from her injuries.
The BMW driver was also taken to hospital for mandatory examination.
Surfers Paradise resident Leo Rodino says he heard what sounded like an “explosion” at the time of the incident.
“I was in my apartment and I heard shots that sounded like an explosion,” he said.
“It must have been the moment he hit the girl. I went out for a walk and saw the police and knew something was up.”
A witness who saw the accident said the woman was thrown from her scooter.

Witnesses said the crash sounded like “an explosion” and one said she saw the woman doing somersaults through the air
“She flew up and it looked like she was doing triple somersaults,” the witness told Seven News.
“It appears we are investigating a serious crash where speed was a factor and the scooter rider may not have been wearing a helmet,” Queensland Police Service Constable Chris Tritton told Seven News.
‘The message is always that we ask people to drive slower and adapt to the circumstances.
Police are currently investigating the incident.
