Awkward moment Sunrise star Edwina Bartholomew tries to get her husband Neil Varcoe to say buying a run-down pub in the country was a good idea
Edwina Bartholomew and her husband Neil Varcoe’s plans to renovate a run-down pub in rural New South Wales got off to a rocky start.
The Sunrise star, 39, recently sold their home in Sydney to buy and renovate the bar in Carcoar and turn it into a hotel, but her partner, 41, doesn’t seem convinced it will work.
In a video posted to Instagram last Wednesday, the journalist gushed about the project and awkwardly tried to get Neil excited about it.
“We just bought this house to turn it into a hotel. Do we know anything about running a hotel?’ Edwina said with a broad smile as they stood outside the dilapidated building.
With his hands in his pockets, Neil replied in a deadpan voice, “No, we don’t.”
Edwina tried to laugh off his negative reaction as she put her arm around him and joked, “We know absolutely nothing.”
Later in the clip, after a montage of the historic sites of Carcoar and the more decrepit features of The Victoria, Edwina once again tried to arouse her husband’s excitement.
“We sold our house in Sydney to buy what was once the old pub… [It has] so much potential. We hope,’ she said.

When Neil didn’t respond, she urged him again, saying, “We really hope.”
Finally he reluctantly admitted, “We hope, yes.”
Edwina laughed off her partner’s dry humor one more time and nudged him clumsily, “Don’t sound so convinced.”

The couple, who share children Molly (3) and Tom (1), plan to film the renovation of the 177-year-old property and turn it into a web series for Instagram.
However, it is unclear how much time they will be able to devote to the project as Edwina will be staying in Sydney during the week with their children so she can work at Sunrise.
Meanwhile, Neil, who recently quit his job at Twitter following the Elon Musk acquisition, will move to Capertee Valley, nearly two hours from Carcoar and three hours west of Sydney.
He will work there as chief farming officer in Warramba – the 1890s farmhouse that he and Edwina lovingly restored several years ago.
