What is dyslexia?

– The word dyslexia is derived from the Greek and means ‘difficulty with words’. People with dyslexia have problems with the underlying skills needed to read, write and spell.

– Dyslexia affects ten percent of the British population

– Tom Cruise, Richard Branson, Winston Churchill and Leonardo da Vinci are famous examples of people who have achieved tremendous success despite being dyslexic, maybe even because of it.

– The Dyslexia Association says: ‘Dyslexia occurs in people of all backgrounds and of all abilities, from people who can’t read to people with college degrees.

“It’s a bewildering mix of difficulties and strengths, and it varies in degree from person to person”

– It is not known what causes dyslexia. There is some evidence that it tends to run in families, so scientists are now looking for a gene that might be responsible.
