An interview with Stormzy reflecting on his ‘painful’ split from Maya Jama has resurfaced as the couple announce they have called it quits once again.
The rapper and the Love Island presenter released a shocking statement on Wednesday confirming they have split after a year of trying to make amends.
During their 2019-2023 split, Stormzy spoke candidly about the mistakes he made during their four-year relationship.
Speaking to Louis Theroux, the chart-topping singer explained how the 2019 split “was probably the biggest catalyst for my growth as a man.’

“It was like, OK, you made a mistake and you’re losing someone you loved, someone you cared about, someone special to you.”
“That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have, right? Short of someone dying, that’s the biggest loss you can have.”
Stormzy subsequently admitted that he had made a mistake during his four-year relationship with Maya and that he never wanted to feel that way again.
He added: ‘I didn’t do what a man should do to fully appreciate love and take care of his wife.’
The couple met in their early twenties, with Stormzy trying to make it as a rapper and Maya pursuing a career as a TV presenter.
They first broke up in 2019 after speculation the rapper had cheated. He later confessed on Song Lessons: “I got my shit together and I thought you’d work it out.”
Last summer it was announced that the couple had rekindled their romance after a four-year hiatus.
On Wednesday they announced via social media that they have decided to end their relationship.

In their joint statement, Maya and Stormzy again called it quits and admitted they had been trying to “make it work” for a year.
They wrote: “We laughed writing this as we never, ever thought we would be the couple to announce a split. However, for the sake of clarity and more importantly to give ourselves the space and grace we both need to move through the next part of our lives in peace, we thought it might be best to do so,” Maya and Stormzy told fans in a joint statement.
‘We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019 and then spent five years trying to rebuild our lives.
‘We have decided to try it for the last time in August 2023. We have done everything we can to make it work for the past year. But recently we have decided to stop.
“We were 21 and 20 when we first met, both at the beginning of our careers. We grew apart for five years, then five years, together. So this last attempt required a lot of figuring out, relearning, and unlearning.

The TV star and rapper confirmed in an Instagram statement on Wednesday that they’ve called it quits again, admitting they spent a year trying to “make it work.”
We tried, but it didn’t work, and that’s okay.
‘We are still incredibly happy together, we still care about and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we spent together and we are still friends and always will be (so if you see us catching up at The Brits or something, don’t make a fuss, we’re real mates!)
“We kindly ask for the grace to continue this together and not worry about it (we very much doubt this will work, but we kindly ask anyway).”
“I love you all and thank you for all the love you have given us, it has been beautiful,” they concluded the message, which was signed “Mike and MJ.”
