Stock markets are closed for trading today due to Good Friday

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for trading on Friday on account of Good Friday. Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), the country’s largest commodity market, will also remain closed for trading today.

The holiday-shortened week saw just three trading days as stock markets were also closed for Holi on Monday, March 25.

According to BSE holiday calendar, trading holidays totaling 14 days have been announced in 2024. Previously, markets were closed for trading on January 26 for Republic Day and March 8 for Shivratri.

According to a report in the Economic timesany changes to the holiday calendar will be announced in advance via a separate circular.

In the next financial year, starting April 1, the markets will be closed twice, in April and November, while the markets will remain closed once each in May, June, July, August, October and December.

On Thursday, the rupee fell by six paise to 83.39 against the US dollar due to a strengthening dollar against major foreign rivals and rising crude oil prices in international markets.

The benchmark Nifty50 rose almost one per cent on Thursday, ending an exuberant 2023-2024 with domestic equities hitting several milestones. The 50-share blue chip index ended the year with a gain of almost 29 percent, its best performance since the Covid-19-hit 2020-2021. Despite the recent sell-off, the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices have risen 70 percent and 60 percent respectively. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex rose 25 percent during the year.
