The Office reboot ‘assembles a team of writers to develop ideas’ for the highly anticipated redo

The Office restart seems to continue.

Screenwriter Greg Daniels, who adapted The Office for American television from the British version of the series of the same name, is assembling a team of writers on Tuesday to explore ideas for a new show, according to reports Deadline.

It’s likely that the new show will feature a documentary crew making a documentary on a different subject, which is a possibility as a starting point for a possible expansion of the Office universe, Daniels has said in the past.

In September 2023, Daniels was rumored to be working on a restart in the wake of the WGA strikes.

The Office premiered in 2015 with an ensemble cast including Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, BJ Novak and Jenna Fischer. The show also starred Mindy Kaling, Leslie David Baker and Melora Hardin.

The story follows the employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, based in Pennsylvania.

The Office is currently in very early talks for a possible spin-off series

The new show, if it happens, won’t be a reboot that brings back the original stars, but will likely take place at a different Dunder Mifflin branch in the Office universe

Last year, Daniels said he was exploring the idea of creating a comeback series.

“I can’t say if fans would want more of it, and if I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters,” he said.

“I think it would be kind of an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way (The) Mandalorian is an extension of Star Wars,” he explained. “But I don’t know if that’s something people would want or not. It’s difficult to estimate.’

The show lasted nine seasons before ending in 2013.

James Spader had taken over after Carell’s departure from the show in season seven.

The series was inspired by the Ricky Gervais-led British original and eventually became a cultural phenomenon, with the series finale in 2013 being watched by a whopping 5.69 million people.

Since the end of the beloved syndicated series, there have been many conversations about continuing the show.

However, Daniels is steadfast that he is not interested in a reboot, but wants to create a new series with new actors who can revisit the original characters in some way.

Original cast members could appear in a new franchise series, but a reunion seems unlikely.

Novak, who was also a writer on the American series, previously confirmed to Deadline that it would not happen.

“You certainly wouldn’t get everyone back together,” he said at the time. ‘That ship has sailed.
