The Lionsgate TV production had consulted with Rivera’s family before choosing Milian to replace her on the scripted series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

At the time, Step Up series creator and executive producer Holly Sorenson said in a statement: “Naya’s death was a terrible loss to our world that, frankly, we will never stop mourning.”

“It was almost impossible to consider that there could be someone so graceful and loving who could help us honor our loss, while also bringing a huge pool of talent to our show, in so many areas. Christina is an exceptional person and a stunning artist and we are so pleased that she has joined our family.”
