Souths fan Anthony Albanese reacts to coach Jason Demetriou’s sacking with a remark that’s sure to infuriate thousands of Bunnies fans
Tragic Premier and South Sydney Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has responded to Jason Demetriou’s resignation, saying he has made an ‘extraordinary effort’.
It comes as club powerbrokers confirmed a conversation with master mentor Wayne Bennett will be part of the ‘exhaustive’ process to secure a new head coach ahead of the 2025 NRL season.
Albanese, a long-time Bunnies supporter, said Tuesday would have been a “tough day” for Demetriou, who was handed a two-year contract and left his team languishing in 17th on the NRL ladder.
‘He has made an extraordinary effort as a coach. A decent man,” Albanese said.
‘It would have been a tough day for him [Tuesday]but I wish him all the best.”

It comes as Wayne Bennett has taken another step towards a return to South Sydney after informing the Dolphins he would like to explore interest from the Rabbitohs due to their vacant head coaching position.
Predictably, it was a very different story on social media when it came to Demetriou’s move.
“Unfortunate, but it had to be done,” one fan wrote as soon as the club confirmed the news on X.
Another weighed in: ‘This whole series of events started when we rented Reyno [Adam Reynolds] to go.
‘Since then the club culture has been on the decline.’
A third did not mince their wordswith the post: ‘In my opinion this [Demetriou] The dismissal is six months late. I’m glad the fraud is finally over.’
Meanwhile, Bennett has taken another step towards a return to South Sydney after informing the Dolphins he wanted to explore interest from the Rabbitohs due to their vacant head coaching position.
Bennett, 74, spent three previous seasons with the Rabbitohs and led the club to two preliminary finals and a grand final in 2021.
He also had players like Latrell Mitchell, Damien Cook and Cody Walker playing their best football.
