- Jason Demetriou’s job is hanging by a thread
- Souths have launched an investigation into their football activities
- Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy are candidates to replace him
Jason Demetriou’s time at South Sydney could be over after the club launched a review into the team’s dreadful start to the season.
According to 9News, the club has called for an internal review of its football operations under the embattled coach following the 34-4 defeat to New Zealand Warriors on Saturday evening.
“The powers that be at the club are concerned about the direction the club is taking under Jason Demetriou,” Nine’s Michael Chammas said on Sunday afternoon.
Demetriou took over from Wayne Bennett at the end of 2021 and signed a contract with the club until 2026.
However, should Souths part ways with Demetriou, they would only have to pay the coach for nine months due to a clause in his contract.

Demetriou has had a terrible start to the season for the club
The board will meet on April 30.
“There’s every chance that if South Sydney don’t get the results against Cronulla, Jason Demetriou’s time at the club could be counted,” Chammas said.
Bennett is reportedly seen as a frontrunner to succeed his Bunnies, with Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy also in the running. Both experienced coaches are currently available from next season.
“The club feels they need an experienced coach as they are currently struggling under Jason Demetriou,” Chammas said.
Sam Burgess is also a contender, with the Souths legend impressing with Warrington Wolves. However, a move seems difficult considering the club’s hierarchy sided with Demetriou last year amid a rift between the two.
