South Carolina’s March Madness championship victory over Caitlin Clark and Iowa also made history off the court. It was the most heavily wagered match in the history of women’s sports.
The game between the Hawkeyes and Gamecocks saw a 205 percent increase in betting on the game, while 155 percent of money spent on the game compared to last year’s LSU-Iowa title game on FanDuel.
On BetMGM Sportsbook, 63 percent of bets against the spread were placed on South Carolina, with the Gamecocks favored by 6.5 points after tip-off.
The Gamecocks won the title 87-75, covering the spread despite 18 first-quarter points from Clark.
Clark scored 30 points in her final college game and heads to the WNBA as the leading total scorer in NCAA history.
South Carolina won the national championship on Sunday with a 12-point victory over Iowa
The betting on South Carolina-Iowa was about 200 percent higher than in last year’s title game
Interest in the game was at an all-time high, in part because it pitted the best team against the best individual player in women’s basketball.
The better the participants, the more likely those who invest in the players will be willing to bet on them.
While last year’s matchup with LSU replacing South Carolina had no shortage of stars with Angel Reese in the mix, this year’s national championship had the benefit of continuing last season’s momentum.
At tip-off, Iowa was a +220 underdog to win the national championship, a bet that would have failed.
According to Ben Fawkes, 10 of the 11 biggest individual bets on the game were on the Gamecocks ATS, including a late bid of $36,000 on the eventual undefeated champions.
