Major efforts are underway to clean up the dangerous mess that has piled up on Bondi Beach, where millions of polystyrene balls have washed up on shore in recent days.
“Urgent: polystyrene balls scattered across the center and south end of the beach!” Bondi resident James McIntosh said in a message to the Bondi Local Loop Facebook group on Thursday evening.
'Come and clean up with us tomorrow. Bring a bag and be a beach hero. Let's protect our sea friends!'
Another local member alerted federal member for Wentworth Allegra Spender to the problem in a message with the opening line: “It's snowing in Bondi!”
Major efforts are underway to clean up the dangerous mess that has piled up on Bondi Beach, where millions of polystyrene balls have washed up on shore in recent days.
The pollution is believed to be the result of an incident at Long Reef on the city's northern beaches
“The beach has a huge amount of Styrofoam balls at the water's edge tonight,” the person said in a message.
“Please help tomorrow when you go swimming and take a plastic bag with you and scoop up what you can.”
Ms Spender shared the 'terrible' news with her 17,400 followers, adding that the pollution is believed to be the result of an incident at Long Reef on the city's northern beaches.
'Yikes! There are hideous little Styrofoam balls washing up on our beautiful Bondi beach,” she said.
Northern Beaches Clean Up Crew has taken on the large-scale clean-up work at Long Reef
The mess was the result of a homemade ship left in the water.
'The balls come from a broken pontoon at Long Reef.
'It's an ugly mess for us, but imagine how terribly devastating it is for our marine life and coastal and ocean wildlife.
Northern Beaches Clean Up Crew have taken charge of the massive clean-up at Long Reef, which they say was the result of a home-made vessel left in the water.
“This ship in Long Reef continues to wreak havoc, releasing polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, all over the beaches,” the group said in a message three days ago.
'The birds eat it, it is everywhere in the sand and in the water. The police, municipality, EPA, DPI, Maritime, etc. have all been informed and despite all these resources, no one seems able to do anything about it.'
“It looks like it's snowed all over Long Reef, all the way to Manly and Cabbage Tree Bay.”
NSW EPA has been contacted for comment.
