A Sky Sports reporter came under fire as he tried to catch a word with Liverpool’s latest managerial love, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Slot has emerged as the number one contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp and talks are developing rapidly with Liverpool, who could even seal a deal this weekend. They may pay more than £10 million in compensation for him.

Journalist Gary Cotterill grabbed a moment with Slot after he stepped off the Feyenoord team bus for the Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles this evening, but he had to be careful not to get too close.

A member of Slot’s entourage put his hand on his shoulder and eventually stood between Cotterill and the Dutchman, cutting off their conversation.

For Liverpool fans, the fact that Slot smiled when asked about his links with the club is an encouraging sign.

The 45-year-old won the Eredivisie last season and has added a KNVB trophy to Feyenoord’s trophy cabinet this season.

His possession, attacking and pressing style have earned him flattering comparisons to Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff.

And he was more than happy to have a chat with Sky Sports as he stayed focused on the task at hand.

“You’re in the news,” Cotterill said as he greeted Slot.

“That’s me,” a beaming Slot admitted.

‘You said you wanted to go to the Premier League. Is it a possibility?’ he was asked.

“I cannot deny that,” Slot responded.

“Liverpool wants you,” Cotterill said as Slot walked away.

“But tonight we’re playing Go Ahead Eagles,” was the answer.

Cotterill expressed his congratulations and Slot thanked him.

With Jurgen Klopp stepping down at the end of the season, Liverpool have been going through a carousel of managers to replace him.

The dream candidate at the start was Xabi Alonso, a former Red who has guided Bayer Leverkusen to its first Bundesliga title and a currently undefeated season.

However, with Alonso confirming his intention to stay in Germany, hearts turned to Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, who has the Portuguese club on course for a second league title in four years.

However, Liverpool’s interest in Amorim has cooled and he flew to London earlier this week for talks with West Ham.
