Initially, Stone adopted Roan with her then-husband Phil Bronstein.
The couple divorced after six years of marriage in 2004, when Roan was just four years old. This resulted in a California judge granting joint custody of the exes.
A then newly single Stone made plans to make Los Angeles her primary residence, while the former couple agreed to have their son live primarily with Bronstein in San Francisco during the school year.
But then, in 2008, Stone disputed the agreement and Roan tried to move to Los Angeles with her, but her request was denied.
Despite the distance between them during school years, mother and son remained close throughout his childhood.
Stone opened up about the emotional cost the custody battle had on her psyche during an appearance on the Table For Two With Bruce Bozzi podcast.
“I ended up at the Mayo Clinic with extra heartbeats in the upper and lower chambers of my heart,” she shared in 2023, before adding that “it broke my heart.”
Roan had two brothers after their parents’ divorce, starting with Laird, 19, in 2005, followed by third son Quinn, 17, a year later.
Stone has been open and honest about the various tragedies she endured throughout her life, before and after becoming a mother, including multiple miscarriages due to an autoimmune disease and endometriosis.

“We women have no forum to discuss the depth of this loss. I have lost nine children to miscarriage,” Stone said People in 2022. ‘It is not a small thing, physically or emotionally, but we still get the feeling that it is something that we have to bear alone and in secret, with a kind of sense of failure.’

That same year, Laird praised his mother when he and his brothers presented Stone with the Mother of the Year award: “My mother deserves this award,” Laird said at the time. ‘I love you mom.’
As Roan grew into adulthood, he eventually decided to follow in his mother’s footsteps by pursuing an acting career.
