Shane MacGowan's wife Victoria Mary Clarke has paid a heartbreaking tribute to the late star, following his death last week at the age of 65.

The Pogues frontman died at home in Dublin on Thursday, surrounded by his family, after developing pneumonia. He married Victoria in Copenhagen in 2018, after being engaged for eleven years and dating for decades.

He had been released from the hospital more than a week earlier after undergoing treatment for viral encephalitis, a condition that causes swelling in the brain.

In her post shared on Monday, Victoria, 57, stated that her husband was “so determined to live” before his death and shared a sweet image showing the hitmaker with a smile that “had a way of making everyone around him to cheer you up).

His death sparked an outpouring of worldwide tributes and launched a renewed campaign to get Fairytale Of New York to number one in Britain for the first time.

The singer had been battling viral encephalitis – a life-threatening condition that leads to swelling of the brain – and had been in and out of St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin for months. He was fired last week ahead of his upcoming birthday on Christmas Day.
