Sex And The City fans are left stunned as show star looks worlds away from his suave character over 20 years after his last appearance

Kyle MacLachlan looked far away from his Sex and the City character Trey MacDougal during a TV appearance on Thursday.

The actor, 65, played Charlotte York’s first husband in the HBO series between 2000 and 2002, with the character leaving a lasting memory for fans thanks to his intense mummy issues.

Kyle showed off his full gray hair and looked very different from the charming dark-haired cardiologist he played in the series.

Speaking on This Morning, he admitted that Trey and his mum Bunny should have had their own ‘spin-off’ show.

Sadly, Frances Hussey Sternhagen – who played Bunny – passed away in November. The actor revealed that he was keen to explore the character’s life without his beloved mother.

He told presenters Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond: ‘Oh Trey could definitely come back. I enjoyed my time on that show.

“I always felt like Trey and Bunny could have their own show. An apartment on the Upper East Side.”

It comes after Kyle revealed he would like to revisit his iconic character Trey and shared his idea for a possible cameo in the spin-off series, And Just Like That.

Following the sad death of costar Frances, the actor revealed that he would like to explore the character’s life without his beloved mother.

Discussing what could happen if Charlotte, played by Kristin Davis, bumps into Trey in a future episode of AJLT, Kyle told DailyMail.com: “I would like to see some kind of character growth. People change, that’s clear.

“It’s a toss-up, I think, for the writers, because I think there’s a tendency to try to find something funny, that would be completely inappropriate, and go down that route.”

Referring to a scene where Charlotte caught Trey pleasuring himself in the bathroom, he continued, “On the one hand, you have to consider that he was a fan of Juggs magazine. So I thought maybe he was married to a woman 30 years younger, who has very big breasts, and this is his thing now. So maybe he really hasn’t changed after all.

“But I would like to think that there was some dynamic, or a world where they could meet, and that there could be something real between the two of them, that would be fun to see.”

Despite his short stint on the show, his character became a fan favorite thanks to bizarre scenes highlighting his mother issues, his impotence and his complete disregard for Charlotte’s fertility issues.

In season four, Trey brought home a cardboard baby for Charlotte as a prank, a scene that fans still bring to the actor to this day.

“Some fans say, ‘I can’t believe you thought a cardboard baby would work,’” the actor recalls. “And I thought, ‘Listen, I’m right there with you.'”

Kyle, founder of Pursued by Bear Wines, continued: “When I read that in the script, I went to the writers and said, ‘Is this just supposed to be funny?’ I should have known this was the beginning of the end for Trey.”

Initially, Kyle found the role “challenging” because he had an “unrealistic expectation” of what the character “would be.”

The Twin Peaks star recalled: ‘I was like, “Once again I’m playing an unusual character with strange circumstances. I guess I just have to accept my fate.”

Although his character’s problems were often addressed in a comedic manner, Kyle admitted that the show’s touch on topics such as impotence was greatly appreciated by fans.

“When we were working on it, it was definitely a little bit embarrassing,” the actor recalls. ‘We didn’t have social media at the level we have now, but I would get responses from people saying these issues were really serious… People would say ‘thank you for bringing this up’. It’s something worth talking about.’

He continued, “It seems like there’s really nothing we can’t talk about these days, any issues whatsoever. Everyone is much more aware and aware of the fact that people have things that aren’t quite right and that it’s okay to talk about them.

“So I think in a way it was a little bit ahead of its time.”
