Port Adelaide star Jeremy Finlayson has revealed he is ‘freaked out’ with his three-week ban for on-field homophobic comments, while his wife Kellie also hit out at his treatment.

Finlayson was given a three-week ban and ordered to attend and pay for a Pride In Sport training program after using the term ‘f****t’ to describe an Essendon player in the fourth round of the Power.

While she appeared at wife Kellie’s ‘Sh!t Talkers’ podcast this week the AFL star spoke briefly about how he feels about the sanction.

“(It) put me off getting a three-week suspension, that’s it, that tipped me over the edge,” he said.

‘We’ll leave it there and [at] That.’

When the story was reported by the Adelaide Advertiser, Kellie took to social media to denounce the publication – despite writing a column for the newspaper.

“The fact that this is the takeaway you got from such a powerful podcast episode, highlighting the daily struggles one man went through while still showing up to perform in front of the incredible AFL community and playing the game where he loves is incredibly embarrassing. she wrote in a now-deleted post.

“You had the opportunity to highlight the incredible man he is, the incredible devastating years he lived, and you chose to beat him up and tear him down, after reporting just weeks ago the influence the media has on the mental health of these boys. ‘

The podcast episode mainly featured Finlayson answering listener questions about his wife Kellie’s battle with cancer, and juggling his role as a professional football player with being a husband and father.

Finlayson formally apologized for making the slur as he awaited the outcome of the AFL’s investigation.

“I take full responsibility for what happened on Friday evening,” Finlayson said in a statement from Port Adelaide.

‘The word I used is very unacceptable in football. We have to eradicate it and I deeply regret it.”

“I knew immediately this was not acceptable and I take full responsibility,” Finlayson said.
