Scottie Scheffler pays tribute to pregnant wife Meredith and insists ‘I’m coming home as quick as I can’ after scooping record $3.6m Masters prize money: ‘It’s a very special time for us’

Immediately after winning the Masters for the second time, the world’s No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler paid tribute to his wife Meredith.

Meredith Scheffler was unable to travel to Augusta National because she is expecting her and Scottie’s first child in the coming days.

Immediately after stepping off the 18th green and entering Butler Cabin for the on-air green jacket ceremony, Scheffler was asked if he had anything to say to his wife back home.

“I’m coming home,” he said. ‘I’ll come home as soon as possible. Yes, I love you and I’m coming home. That’s all.’

When questioned further, he joked: “You’re going to make me cry.

‘It’s a very special time for both of us. I really can’t put into words what it means to win this tournament again, I really can’t put into words what it will be like to be a father for the first time.

“So I’m looking forward to coming home and celebrating with Meredith, it’s been a long week here without her.”

When Scheffler spoke publicly again during the official ceremony, he echoed the sentiment in a speech.

“I love you sweetie, I’m excited for the next few weeks. I’m excited to go home. I miss you and I love you, and I’ll be home soon.”

Scheffler may have been waiting for news that Meredith was going into labor and he made it clear that he would withdraw from the tournament if she did indeed go into labor.

Luckily for Scottie, that didn’t happen and he claimed the $3.6 million prize for winning the tournament – and of course the illustrious green jacket.
