School Spirits, the supernatural teen television series starring Peyton List, returns for a second season.

Paramount+, the streaming service that distributes the show, officially renewed the series on June 20, it said deadline.

Production for Season 2 will begin in March 2024.

The news comes just two months after the end of the first season with a cliffhanger.

The show’s first season, which consisted of eight episodes, was released for distribution by Paramount+ on March 9, 2023.

School Spirits is produced by the production company Awesomeness, Paramount Global’s in-house studio aimed at young adults.

Deadline also reported that Paramount+ claimed that School Spirits was the top YA series on the streaming service during its run.

“School Spirits developed such a passionate and engaged fan base over the course of its first season, marking one of our most popular new young adult series to date.” Domenic DiMeglio, chief marketing officer and head of data at Paramount Streaming, said in a statement to Variety.

Paramount+ did not provide specific details when it made the claim.

Set in the fictional town of Split River, Wisconsin, School Spirits stars List as Maddie Nears, a student who dies at her school and is unable to leave while trying to discover who killed her.

As a result, she embarks on a crime-solving journey to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death while adjusting to high school in the afterlife.

As Maddie gets closer to the truth about her mysterious disappearance and death, she slowly discovers more secrets and lies.

In addition to List, the show’s cast also includes Kristian Flores as Simon Elroy, Spencer MacPherson as Xavier Baxter, Kiara Pichardo as Nicole Herrera, Sarah Yarkin as Rhonda, Nick Pugliese as Charley, Rainbow Wedell as Claire Zomer, and Milo Manheim as Wally Clark.

The supernatural teen drama television series is based on the upcoming graphic novel of the same name created by Megan Trinrud and Nate Trinrud.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that both Megan and Nate will return for Season 2 alongside showrunner Oliver Goldstick.

Goldstick is also an executive producer on the series.

Season 1 of School Spirits received positive and favorable reviews from critics, featuring Rotten tomatoes noting that the series achieved an approval rating of 83% with an average rating of 7.3/10, based on 18 critic reviews.

“School Spirits misses some of its promising potential, but Peyton List’s stellar lead role makes this paranormal mystery a solid watch for anyone who remembers the phantom pain of growing up.” The Critics Consensus stated on its section on the website.
