Sam Kerr’s bid to have a case against her dismissed has been postponed after she was sued for allegedly calling a police officer a “stupid white cop.”

Footballer Kerr, 30, was charged in March with racially aggravated harassment of a police officer and entered a not guilty plea, with Kingston Crown Court scheduling a four-day trial for February 2025.

Her case was referred to Kingston Crown Court today, where the judge adjourned the case until the next appearance on Monday, May 20. No representatives of Kerr or the prosecution were present.

The judge said: ‘This case was due to be heard today but the defense has requested an adjournment and a review of the timetable. That has been resolved and today’s hearing has been cancelled.

“The defense must submit their response by May 1 and the prosecution by May 15. The application will now be listed for Monday, May 20.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed at the time that the incident, on January 30, 2023, was sparked by a dispute over a taxi fare before Kerr allegedly used abusive, threatening or insulting words that caused PC Lovell alarm or distress.

The Chelsea and the Australian star reportedly called Lovell a “stupid white PC,” which is short for police officer. She also allegedly threw up in the taxi.

Kerr was charged with intentionally causing racial intimidation, alarm or fear to the male PC under section 31(1)(b) of the Act. Crime and Disorders Act 1998.

She was summoned by postal request to make her first appearance at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on February 1. The case was then transferred to Kingston Crown Court.

A hearing was due to take place today, April 26, and her defense was expected to seek to dismiss the case on the grounds of an abuse of process, but it has now been postponed until May 20.

Kerr, who suffered an ACL injury in early January during a warm-weather training camp in Morocco, will likely prevent her from playing with the Matildas at the Paris Olympics.

Australia will play its group stage matches in Marseille and Nice and open their Olympic campaign against Germany on July 25 at the Stade de Marseille.

It normally takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL, but professional athletes often need more time to regain their strength and fitness. That means Kerr would have to defy medical history to have any chance of playing for the Matildas.

She has revealed the reality that she is playing a role on the pitch in Paris – and the news is not good for Matildas fans. “Realistically, the Olympics probably won’t happen, but I’m still trying to push to get there as soon as possible,” she said in an interview with Vogue magazine.

‘It’s probably a bit too early [for the Olympics] But I do everything I can every day to be as strong as possible, to be as fit as possible and to play my best football again.’

She has said that in addition to her own football career, she can devote more time to the Sam Kerr Football initiative. This foundation aims to provide opportunities for all children to build a career in sport and provide in-depth guidance in physical wellbeing to produce the Matildas and Socceroos of the future.

She has also raised the possibility of pursuing the career Kerr has dreamed of outside of football and becoming a DJ. That could even start at the Paris Olympics, where Kerr could become the resident DJ for the Matildas in the Olympic Village.
