Ryan Reynolds insists that the PREMIER LEAGUE is Wrexham’s ultimate goal

Ryan Reynolds has vowed to give everything he has to help lead Wrexham, currently in the fifth tier, to the Premier League.

The Deadpool star, along with co-chairman Rob McElhenney, have helped transform the Welsh team and have found great success documenting their progress in the first season of their documentary series, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Now, on the eve of an FA Cup fourth round match against second division Sheffield United, Reynolds dreams of reaching the top to compete with Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

“We want to walk the path, even as a fifth-tier club. We say this all the time, but we want to be in the Premier League, crazy as it sounds to some people.” Reynolds told ESPN.

‘If it’s theoretically possible to move from the fifth division of professional football to the Premier League, why not do it? Why wouldn’t we use our last drop of blood to get there?’

Wrexham are currently fighting for promotion to the fourth division. They are top of the fifth-tier National League, three points ahead of their nearest rivals Notts County.

And thus they are a long way from the top-tier Premier League – not that that stops Reynolds, McElhenney and the fanbase from dreaming.

This weekend the focus is on the knockout tournament that is the FA Cup, a competition that starts with 732 teams and now narrows down to the last 32.

Wrexham are the only non-league team – outside the top four divisions of England and Wales – remaining in the competition after upsetting second-tier Coventry City in the last round.

Reynolds followed his victory over Coventry from his New York City apartment, along with his wife Blake Lively and their three daughters.

Sam Dalby headed Wrexham into a shock lead after 12 minutes before they found themselves up 4-1 early in the second half. They would go on to hold on for a 4-3 win.

“He was running around like some kind of rabid tiger snorting drugs,” Reynolds joked.

Reynolds has been hooked on football since becoming co-chairman of the Wales team and has made no secret that his own journey has been a roller coaster.

“Two years ago, I didn’t have this kind of passion for the sport and, in a way, I see it as a plague,” he added.

“In other ways, I see it as the best presentation I’ve ever been given, at least from a sporting perspective. It’s wild. I wish it didn’t dominate as many of my thoughts and actions as it does these days, but one doesn’t do anything great without enthusiasm, they say.

Wrexham go into Sunday’s home cup game against Sheffield United underdogs, but manager Phil Parkinson is looking forward to the chance to make more history in the competition.

“The owners, since they came in, and all of us together, are working hard to put Wrexham firmly back on the football map, and this is a big step in that direction,” Parkinson said.

“We wanted a home tie because I feel the racecourse deserves a special FA Cup game, and we have it, it’s going to be an exciting atmosphere.

“This place is packed for league games, but there’s always a special feeling about FA Cup football.”

Wrexham vs. Sheffield United can be seen on ESPN+ on Sunday, kicking off at 11:30am ET.
