It comes as Ryan said he was “obviously disappointed” that a new trial was ordered on domestic abuse allegations against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, as he faces a wait of at least ten months to learn his fate.

In a statement, he thanked “my legal team, my mother, my children, my girlfriend Zara, as well as my closest friends, for their support throughout this period.”

The retrial decision came after the Crown Prosecution Service decided it would prosecute the former footballer after a jury failed to reach a verdict after a three-week trial.

The former Wales manager, 48, is accused of assaulting Greville, 38, and his sister Emma, ​​26, amid an alcohol-fueled argument at their multi-million dollar home in Worsley, Greater Manchester.

He is also charged with coercive and controlling behavior toward public relations executive Greville for three years, charges he denies.

Ryan said in a statement: “After more than three weeks in court, I am obviously disappointed that a new trial has been ordered.”

During a brief hearing at Manchester Crown Court, the judge approved a request from the prosecution for a second trial. Giggs was excused from attendance.

Peter Wright QC, prosecutor, told Judge Hilary Manley: “We are seeking a new trial in respect of Mr Giggs.

“The matter has been considered at a higher level within the Crown Prosecution Service and the whistleblower’s willingness to testify has also been probed, although that is not determinative of the matter.

‘They indicate a preparation to do so. Accordingly, we invite you to set a date for the new trial of this matter.

Judge Manley set the trial date, at the next date available to prosecution and defense attorneys, at July 31, 2023 for a trial estimated to last three to four weeks.
