Russia is barred from building a new embassy near Parliament House in Canberra due to national security concerns.
The government, with the support of the opposition, will introduce legislation in parliament to block the move.
“The government has been given very clear security advice about the risk of a new Russian presence so close to the parliament building and we are acting quickly to ensure that the leased site does not become a formal diplomatic presence,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters on Thursday.
