Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has apologized for the ‘completely wrong’ timing of his visit to London to speak to West Ham this week.

On Monday he flew to London to speak to the Hammers as they assessed their options, with David Moyes’ future up in the air.

And Amorim himself was in the air shortly afterwards, flying back to Portugal and landing just after midnight on Tuesday, where a swarm of journalists bombarded him with questions.

Sporting is chasing the Portuguese title and can seal it on Sunday evening with a victory over second-placed Porto.

‘It was a mistake. The timing was completely wrong,” Amorim admitted after flying out in such a critical week.

“I always ask my players to be respectful and I wasn’t, even though I had informed the club before.”

“I am so sorry and I apologize to the fans, the club and the players.”

Amorim is a hero for Sporting and is on the verge of winning a second title in four seasons.

When he won the title in 2020/21, it was the first in almost two decades.

He was the favorite for the Liverpool job after Xabi Alonso confirmed his intention to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, but their interest cooled and they have now agreed a compensation deal with Feyenoord for their manager Arne Slot. The package for Slot could amount to £9.42 million.

Caught in the middle of this situation is Moyes, who is probably wondering what else he needs to do to fully win over the West Ham faithful.

He won them the Europa Conference League title last season and they are once again competing for European football after finishing sixth, seventh and fourteenth in the past three seasons.
