A set of $2 commemorative coins sold out in less than a day and is now fetching three times the original asking price of $235.
The 14-coin set marks the 35th anniversary of the launch of the $2 coin in Australia and features colorful variations for special occasions of the past, including the hugely popular red poppy Remembrance Day design from 2012.
After quickly selling out Thursday morning, the set is already priced at $630 on coin trading websites Thursday evening.
A huge queue formed outside the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra from Wednesday afternoon to secure one of the sets, which went on sale at 8.30am.
A new set of $2 commemorative coins, including one designed after the popular 2012 Red Poppy Remembrance Day issue, quickly sold out Thursday
After the Mint posted on its Facebook page that the set had sold out both in-store and by phone order, one frustrated gambler made his displeasure known.
“Thank you Royal Australian Mint for a day well spent, making literally thousands of calls, with no reward whatsoever,” they wrote.
“For future reference, I don't care how many copies of this stuff there are, so why not take a leaf from other mints around the world and take pre-orders online and make the mint to your liking?”
'Impossible to get through the call center! Very disappointing, always!,” wrote another.
Collector Coincryptobra posted TikTok videos of the line stretching down the road from the Mint in the hours before it opened.
He later said he got a set after a two and a half hour wait.
“The experience is good and you meet collectors,” he said.
On Wednesday, a line of eager coin collectors began to form for the Mint's opening at 8:30 a.m. Thursday
The 2015 Lest we Forget Design was one of the motifs in the 14-coin set released Thursday
The Mint held out some hope for those who missed it today.
It said there was still some stock of the product left that will be sold through a voting system.
To do this, the Mint will collaborate with online trading platform EQL.
“We are very close to finalizing our agreement with EQL, and we will inform you as soon as we confirm the time and date for the vote,” the Mint said.
The 2012 Red Poppy $2 coin, with its striking scarlet-colored center, is Australia's most valuable circulating coin, currently worth up to $280.
