Roman Kemp is left red-faced as his dad Martin admits to telling him things ‘fathers should never say to their son’

Roman Kemp was left red-faced during an appearance on Saturday Kitchen when his dad Martin admitted he told him things ‘dads should never say’.

The pair have teamed up to present a new weekly podcast and appeared on the BBC One show to promote it.

With each episode promising to discuss “death, marriage, parties and more,” Roman explained that no topic is off the table.

He told host Matt Tebbutt: “If you’ve seen us on Gogglebox you’ll see my dad tells me more than I probably need to hear.”

Taking things a step further, Martin then revealed: ‘I say things to Ro that fathers should never say to their sons.’

He then added: ‘We’ve lost parenthood now, we’re just going for the blurred line.’

Roman agreed, saying, “What’s happened now is I’m the parent now,” before Martin said, “There’s never been a hierarchy.”

Despite Spandau Ballet’s Martin, 62, and his son Roman, 31, being firm favorites on the Celebrity version of Gogglebox, where viewers can get more insight into their famous lives, Roman admitted this wasn’t always the case.

He said: β€œWhen Gogglebox came on the market my dad didn’t necessarily want to do it at first.

“You know he was quite introverted and didn’t really want to show off much of his private life.”

β€œBut for me, I want to be able to show my grandchildren the relationship that I have with my father.

The partnership comes after Roman revealed his reason for quitting his presenting role on Capital Breakfast in March, ten years after joining the channel as a relative unknown and seven years after earning his promotion to early morning.

The presenter was devastated after close friend and colleague Joe Lyons – a producer for Capital FM – committed suicide in 2020 at the age of 31.

Roman, now the same age as Lyon at the time of his unexpected death, has since admitted the tragedy was a contributing factor to his decision to leave Capital, with his seat now occupied by Jordan North.

He admitted he felt like he was “living the same day over and over again” after Lyons committed suicide in August 2020.

He told the Daily mirror: ‘I need this time for myself. I’ve been with that company (Global) for ten years, and with that show for seven years now.

β€œI tried to spin the plates and do everything, but I realized this is getting in the way of my life. You can’t enjoy your own life.

β€œIf you think about a radio show, you have to go out and dance in front of the audience every day and every now and then you have to give yourself a break, and I didn’t do that for myself.

“It got to the point of ‘I have to put this behind me now’.”

Speaking about his best friend and colleague Joe ‘Producer Joe’ Lyons relating to his decision to leave, he added: ‘It’s doing what happened for me.

‘That sounds wild, but I mean it, it’s not normal. Imagine a tragedy has happened in your home and you want to move.”
