Perry’s hits over a career spanning two decades include California Gurls, Roar, Firework and I Kissed a Girl.

Mr. Sunak also insisted that he and King Charles get along during their weekly audiences.

He said he was impressed with “how incredibly committed he is to serving our country and his strong desire to represent everyone, you know, from all walks of life.”

“I think he does that really brilliantly. And for that he deserves a lot of credit,” the prime minister added.

“I see it up close and it’s a real privilege to get that opportunity every week. And we are lucky that he does that work.’

In addition to Perry, Take That, Lionel Richie and world opera star Andrea Bocelli have been signed up to appear at the event in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Other names revealed by the BBC include Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel and singer Freya Ridings who will perform a duet with producer and musician Alexis Ffrench.

Some 20,000 members of the public will attend the coronation concert on Sunday 7 May, which will be broadcast on BBC1 and Radio 2, along with catch-up services.

Billed as “celebrating a new chapter in the country’s history,” the concert will have “themes of love, respect and optimism” as it celebrates the “four nations” and the Commonwealth.
