Television legend and former AFL player Rex Hunt has been rushed to hospital after suffering a medical episode while behind the wheel of his car.

Victoria Police say they responded to an incident at a Little River service station, southwest of Melbourne, on Tuesday morning.

Rex Hunt, 73, is understood to have been driving on Princes Freeway towards Geelong when around 2am he stopped and called police for help.

Officers arrived and spoke to him around 2:15 a.m. before he was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Hunt is believed to have suffered a medical episode.

Hunt, a former AFL player, won a premiership with Richmond and also played for St Kilda and Geelong.

He went on to become the preeminent football broadcaster of the 1990s thanks to his exciting and energetic commentary style and also hosted a long-running TV fishing show.
