Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on this season's title contenders following the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal on Saturday.

Arsenal took an early lead at Anfield through Gabriel's header, but were promptly denied by the hosts when Mohamed Salah scored his twelfth Premier League goal of the season to equalize.

The match was engulfed in controversy, with the hosts being denied a penalty after Martin Odegaard appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area, while referee Chris Kavanagh's decision not to award a penalty was upheld by VAR.

Kostas Tsimikas is also facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken collarbone following a challenge with Bukayo Saka that saw him collide with Jurgen Klopp in his technical area.

Speaking after the match, Carragher lamented his former side's attacking failures, noting that Klopp may have to look for attacking reinforcements in January as Luis Diaz struggles to recapture his form after returning from injury.

The centre-back turned pundit also gave his thoughts on the impact Saturday's clash could have on the title race, noting that from both sides, Mikel Arteta's men look more likely to challenge for top spot at this stage .

“I think I prefer Arsenal to Liverpool,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

'When I look at the strength of the two central defenders [William Saliba and Gabriel] and Declan Rice in midfield, they look really solid.

“When they came to Anfield it was tough for them but they didn't really give away many chances. It was the same at Aston Villa, they were sad to lose that.

'And Liverpool and Aston Villa are the two best teams on home turf this season, that's what the records tell you.

'Even though Arsenal only got one point from those two games, I was more impressed with their performance than the points they scored.'

Saturday's result sees the Gunners retain top spot after losing just twice in their first 16 games.

Defending champions Manchester City are currently six points behind fifth place, but can halve that gap when they travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton on Wednesday.
