Referees Support group blames Jose Mourinho after Roma fans harassed Anthony Taylor and his family

‘We fear a referee is going to be killed’: Head of referee support group blames Jose Mourinho after England official Anthony Taylor and his family were harassed by mobs of Roma fans

The CEO of a charity that supports referees has condemned Jose Mourinho’s attack on Anthony Taylor after Roma lost the Europa League final against Sevilla on Wednesday. His actions could lead to a referee being ‘killed’.

Speaking talkSPORTMartin Cassidy said the incident, which took place after the final whistle at Budapest’s Puskas Arena, was “really worrying”, alongside other attacks on referees by top-flight managers.

Taylor was also harassed by Roma fans at the airport while on his way home from the final with his family.

Cassidy said: “It’s a really worrying incident this, and we hope Anthony and his family are okay and well supported.”

“I think people need to recognize the consequences of what they say, what they tweet, what they do.

“Look at what has happened in our own country, we have been saying for a long time that we are afraid that a match official will be killed. And this is another step closer.’

Ref Support’s CEO stressed that Mourinho should receive a suspension and Roma an additional penalty for their head coach’s actions.
