BlendJet is recalling about 4.8 million of its portable blenders due to cuts and fire hazards after receiving dozens of reports of injuries, federal regulators said Thursday.
According to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, BlendJet 2 portable blenders may overheat or catch fire, and the blender blades may break off during use.
There have been 329 reports of blades breaking during use to date, as well as 17 additional reports of overheating or fire resulting in approximately $150,000 in property damage claims. The company also received 49 reports of minor burns and one report of cuts.
Regulators urged consumers to immediately stop using the recalled blenders and contact BlendJet for a free replacement of the base unit. To receive the replacement part, customers must remove the rubber seal from the base and cut it into pieces and email or upload a photo via BlendJet's website.
BlendJet said in a prepared statement that the recall affects older Blender 2 blenders and that BlendJet 2 blenders now for sale through the company's website and retail partners have updated components and are not affected by the recall.
“Out of an abundance of caution, our company has updated the base of the BlendJet 2 with thicker blades and an improved electrical configuration,” BlendJet wrote in a Thursday press release. “These updates were included many months ago in all BlendJet 2 devices manufactured by the company.”
BlendJet 2 blenders with serial numbers beginning with the numbers “5543” or higher are not included in the recall, the Benicia, California-based company said. Consumers can also confirm whether or not their blender is being recalled by providing product information on BlendJet's website or contacting the company.
According to the CPSC, the recalled BlendJet Portable Blenders were sold online and in stores at retailers such as Costco, Walmart and Target between October 2020 and November 2023.
In addition to the 4.8 million BlendJet 2 blenders recalled in the U.S., about 117,000 have been sold in Canada, according to regulators.
