When she was a teenager, her grandmother sent her to rejoin her estranged mother and sister in St. Louis.

There she met singer Ike Turner, who would become her 16-year-old husband and musical partner.

But their relationship was famously fraught with problems and formed the basis for her film What’s Love Got to Do with It?

Ike told PEOPLE in 1990: “All the fights Tina and I had were about her being sad about something.

“I get very emotional when you’re worried and don’t tell me what it is. Then I can’t think of anything else. So I’d slap her or something.’

They broke up in the 1970s and Ike died in 2007 at the age of 76.
