Queensland Premier Steven Miles is hit with horror YouGov poll result – despite social media campaign featuring endless photos of his biceps

A concerted social media campaign by Labor Prime Minister Steven Miles has failed to stop his government’s polls as a new YouGov survey shows the Liberal National Party is on course for an election victory.

YouGov polls released on Friday show two-party preferred support for the LNP opposition rose by two per cent to 56 per cent compared to a previous poll in October.

This compared with 44 percent for the government after 1,092 voters were surveyed between April 9 and 17.

The opposition also increased its primary vote to 44 percent, compared to 27 percent for Miles’ government, according to the poll published by The Courier-Mail on Friday.

That represents a drop of six percentage points in Labor primaries since October and a fall of almost 13 percent since Labor’s 2020 election victory under former Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Mr Miles has made a determined effort to promote himself on social media, with photos of himself completing a workout, listening to Taylor Swift’s album and showing off his biceps pulling the bins and getting his flu vaccine.

He also posed for a photo with the family of Molly the magpie – the social media-famous bird that was briefly removed from its family due to concerns from environmental authorities, before Mr Miles pushed for the bird’s return.

Current projections indicate that the LNP will comfortably win more than the thirteen seats needed to form a majority government in the October 26 election.

Mr Miles said with Opposition Leader David Crisafulli leading the polls, it was time he announced his vision for Queensland.

β€œHe still hasn’t put in place any concrete plan for our state,” the premier told reporters in Mackay on Friday.

β€œI know he wants to be a little target. I know he wants to stay as small as possible so that Queenslanders don’t know what his plans are.

“So you can’t just say you’ve got one without telling Queenslanders what’s in it, especially when you have the kind of polling today that says it’s more likely, very likely, that he will be Prime Minister in October become.’

Under Mr Crisafulli, the LNP has already secured an extra seat this year, following a huge swing towards the party during two by-elections in March.

The Labor government lost the previously safe seat of Ipswich West to Darren Zanow, who received 39.6 percent of the primary vote with a swing of 17.8 percent.

The Labor margin for Ipswich West after the 2020 election was 14.3 per cent.

The government also faced a massive upheaval in Inala, previously Labor’s safest seat in the state.

Labour’s Margie Nightingale retained the former seat of Palaszczuk with 37 per cent of the primary vote, but not without a 21.5 per cent swing to the LNP.

Cost of living, health and crime are the top issues facing Queenslanders in the run-up to the election.

The Queensland Greens and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation also increased their primary votes by two percentage points each to 15 percent and 10 percent respectively, the YouGov poll showed.
