A third installment of Princess Diaries is sure to hit the big screen, as it’s been revealed that Disney has hired Adele Lim to direct the next film in the popular franchise, but there’s still no confirmation on whether or not Anne Hathaway will return .
Hathaway co-starred with Julie Andrews in 2001’s The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and both films were directed by the late Garry Marshall, who died in 2016.
Lim, who is best known for writing Crazy Rich Asians, shared Variety in a statement: “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I am beyond excited to be part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.
“We look forward to celebrating the core values of feminine power, joy and mentorship with a global audience,” she added.
The script will be written by Flora Greeson, while the film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who created the film franchise starring Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, who is stunned to discover that she is the heir apparent of Genovia.

Princess Diaries 3 has been in development since 2022, and last year Hathaway shared her excitement about the highly anticipated film’s progress.
During an interview with V Magazine, the 41-year-old Hollywood star said: ‘We are in a good place. There is nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.’
However, it looks like The Devil Wears Prada actress hasn’t officially signed on to the project yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping and praying.
Fans were thrilled with the news about Lim and took to I’m too stunned to say anything.’
Another said: ‘I’ve wanted another Princess Diaries movie all my life, no one is going to ruin this moment for me,’ and a third person said: ‘WE’RE GETTING PRINCESS DIARIES 3. I can’t believe it, I’m so HAPPY .’
A fourth posted: ‘PRINCESS DIARIES 3 IS IN PROGRESS. WE GET PRINCESS DIARIES 3 YES YES YES YES YES THIS IS EVERYTHING FOR ME!!!!!!! MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE MY PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED THANK YOU!!!!!!!’
Someone else predicted the storyline and wondered: ‘I wonder if Mia will have a child of her own in Princess Diaries 3.’
And another fan said: ‘Okay, and now they’re announcing Princess Diaries 3 is coming. Wtf Excuse me????? WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING? RN, not that I’m complaining, but OMG, okay, let me catch my breath.”
The exciting news comes after Andrews, 89, suggested the third Princess Diaries film may be shelved.

During an appearance on Today in March, the Sound of Music star gave her take on the third film, saying, “There was a dialogue about it.
However, nothing had been achieved. And I think I might be wrong, but I think it’s on the shelf now. I’m not sure.
“It’s been a long time since the two diaries were finished, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. “I don’t like it when people milk the subject and milk it, you know, ’til it’s dead,” she said.
“I’d be really happy if we did another one. But I don’t expect that.’
