Karina Amaya, 20, from Lugoff, South Carolina, grew up in a religious home where her parents checked — and often confiscated — her cell phone every night and her social time was kept limited.
Despite this, she met her current husband and the father of her twin girls and started dating at the age of 13, hiding the romance by communicating via a secret phone.
Two years later, at the age of 15, Karina snuck him into her bedroom for the first time, resulting in a shocking twin pregnancy. Fearing her parents’ reaction, she would eventually hide it for five months before her mother’s suspicions forced her to confess.
Looking back, Karina remembers feeling “terrible” at the time. She said, “I felt really bad… like I didn’t know… I just felt really bad. And I started crying too.

‘I felt bad because I didn’t know how my father felt about it or what he was going to tell me. I thought he was going to kick me out of the house.”
Although Karina kept her pregnancy a secret for almost five months, it was not an easy task.
After successfully hiding that she was pregnant for weeks, Karina said her mother became suspicious, citing her daughter’s protruding belly and “skinny” body as the reason.
At 5 a.m. that same morning, Karina said her mother took her to a gas station to buy a pregnancy twist — which was “of course positive.”
The former high school student — who graduated through an online class — said she initially had no idea she was carrying identical twins, just like her parents.
It wasn’t until she attended her first ultrasound that she discovered the shocking news.
Hit with the double whammy of learning that their daughter was not only pregnant, but with twins – it was a tough pill for her parents to swallow.
She explained: ‘When they found out, my father went to his room and closed the door and stayed in there, and my mother started crying on the floor.’

But later, things would turn for the better as her parents slowly accepted the news.
She talked about the moment her father came home from work one evening and said the supportive words she had longed to hear.
He told her “everything will be okay” and that he would support his daughter through her first motherhood journey.
Karina also said that her father started building a private room for his new granddaughters to enjoy.
Meanwhile, Karina’s mother stood by her side and came with her to every medical appointment and ultrasound.
Later, Karina talked about her parents’ excitement that the girls would be the first twins in the family.

‘When I saw the two lines I thought: what?!’ Karina said.
“When my mother found out, I started crying… she hugged me and she was there to support me.”
She also shared her reasons for “keeping” her pregnancy despite what society may think of her.
She added: “A lot of people judge us, I got a lot of hate comments… that I should have had an abortion – that my future and my life were over.
‘Being a mother means something very special to me. I know what my mother means to me, so I know what I will mean to my girls.”
The mother of two also painted a realistic picture of what it’s like to raise twins, admitting it’s “hard work.”

Five years after her ordeal, Karina has put it all down to fate: “I feel like I was destined for twin motherhood,” she said. “Of course it’s hard, but motherhood in general is hard.”
