Shocking images have emerged of a man being confronted by police (pictured) after he allegedly stabbed a male police officer near the Anzac Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon.

A male officer was heard shouting at the man to drop the knife.

‘Put the knife down. Put it down,” he ordered.

The officer and his female colleague warned the man several times to drop the weapon as they approached him while keeping their distance from him.

The officers chased the man before someone used a Taser to subdue the man.

He was arrested a short time later at the corner of Bathurst and Elizabeth streets.

The man, who was wearing a gray sweater and pants, was then surrounded by police and paramedics.

Dozens of officers swarmed the busy strip before several roads were closed while a police operation was carried out.

The roads were later reopened and the police said there was no ongoing threat to the population.

The injured officer and a female colleague were monitoring traffic in the busy district when the alleged attack took place. Daily telegram reported.

A witness previously told Daily Mail Australia the chaotic scene was “well under control” after plainclothes police arrived in unmarked cars. Officers arrived in two riot vans.

While the man was being arrested by police, the officer who was allegedly attacked was treated by his colleagues, who wrapped bandages around the injured areas.

His alleged attacker was still armed when he was arrested.

“He still had the knife in his grip and demanded that the police shoot him,” Detective Chief Inspector Martin Fileman later told reporters.

Chief Inspector Fileman said the man did not say anything to officers when he approached them before the alleged attack took place.

He said the man is known to police about previous cases.

“There is no history of mental illness in our database,” Supt Fileman added.

NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley was disappointed to hear a police officer had been injured in the line of duty.

“My thoughts are with the injured officer and the entire police family following this shocking event [alleged] attack,” she said.

“Police work tirelessly and selflessly to serve and protect our community. They should never be confronted with violence. ‘
