Messi was praised by pundits Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Pablo Zabaleta and Rio Ferdinand after helping Argentina reach the quarterfinals of what will almost certainly be their last World Cup, but Morgan didn’t take words very well. On twitter.
Morgan, who has a strong relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and conducted the Portugal star’s recent breakout interview against Manchester United, called the praise “unbearably ingratiating” when Lineker and company heaped praise on Messi on air.
Piers Morgan has criticized the BBC’s praise for Lionel Messi after his last goal for Argentina
Gary Lineker was among the pundits who praised the striker, who scored his 789th career goal in his 1,000th game.
He posted: ‘The relentless Messi fangirling by the entire BBC insider team is becoming unbearably obsequious. I was worried that one of them might have an “accident” in the studio.
Calm down, guys. He had a good game against an average team. See how he does against a good team.
Messi scored Argentina’s first goal in the 2-1 draw over Australia with a neat shot that Ferdinand described as ‘special’.
Messi’s good finishing against Australia helped Argentina qualify for the World Cup quarterfinals.
Morgan has a close relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, an indirect rival of Messi.
Lineker, who has regularly made his admiration for Messi known, responded to Morgan, posting: “Nice to see you briefly emerge from Ronaldo’s guts to express your opinion.”
The striker is the joint top scorer in the World Cup so far, with three goals to his credit.
His Argentina team has bounced back from a shock opener loss to Saudi Arabia to win their last three games and book a draw against the Netherlands in the last eight next week.
Twitter users were quick to criticize Morgan, with Lineker pointing out an alleged hypocrisy given her love for Ronaldo.
“You were literally praising Ronaldo on Twitter for a goal he didn’t even score,” said one user.
‘And the award for most ironic tweet goes to…’ added another.
Morgan recently conducted a rare revealing interview against Manchester United with Ronaldo.
