These are the two young children who died after becoming entangled in the rough waters of the California Current while on an excursion with their mother.

Sophie Humann, 4, and her brother Deejay Humann, 2, were swept away Tuesday after entering the fast-flowing waters of a San Bernardino creek.

The children played near Mill Creek while on a day out with their mother at the Thurman Flats picnic area.

While the mother was caring for her son, the girl entered the water and was swept away by the current, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

The mother began a desperate search for her daughter, but when she returned to the little boy, she realized he had disappeared too.

“After a frantic search, she walked to the picnic area and contacted another family to help search for the children, but was unable to locate them,” the sheriff’s statement said.

Fire and law enforcement officials were called in to assist in the desperate search for the young children.

The little girl was eventually found at the edge of the creek at 4:39 p.m. and her brother at 5:04 p.m., abc7 reported.

A San Bernardino County Fire swift water rescue team was eventually able to locate them in the water.

The girl was sent by ambulance to Redlands Community Hospital, while the boy was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Despite being rushed to local hospitals and given life-saving measures, both children were tragically pronounced dead at the hospital, the sheriff’s statement said.

a GoFundMe for the Children has raised more than $10,000.

It reads: ‘On May 7, 2024, God welcomed two more beautiful angels through His gates. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sophie and Deejay Humann.

“Both were a shining spark in this world and will be greatly missed. They have touched the lives of so many and it is our turn to give back to their families in this time of need.

‘We are raising money to cover the costs of funeral and memorial services for Sophie and Deejay’s family as this death was completely unexpected. We want to give Deejay and Sophie the memorial they deserve, to honor their memory and say our final goodbyes.’

Mill Creek is a 17.5-mile stream located in the San Bernardino Mountains.
