Pictured – British ‘carbon monoxide’ tragedy couple, who married two weeks before analyst died

A British holidaymaker who died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Mallorca had married his Scottish bride just two weeks before the tragedy, local media reported today.

Jaime Carsi, 40, and his wife Mary Somerville, 39, were found in bed in each other’s arms at a vacation home on the island on Saturday, a report said.

The respected island newspaper Ultima Hora said they got married just 15 days ago, meaning the couple were probably on their honeymoon.

It was reported that they would be going on a boat trip with friends on Saturday. When friends could not reach them, they contacted the police who found Mr Carsi dead and his partner unconscious.

An autopsy conducted yesterday concluded that Jaime had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The couple are said to have flown from their home in Edinburgh to spend time together at the rural property in Cala Mesquida in the northeast of the island.

Mary, a former Lloyds bank employee who taught yoga and meditation through a volunteer-based NGO in which her partner was also heavily involved, is still in a “serious condition” in an intensive care unit at Mallorca’s Manacor Hospital.

Patti Montella, a friend of the couple, described Jaime as a “magnificent soul” in an emotional social media post.

She wrote alongside a photo of her with Jaime and Mary, “Jaime Carsi came into my life and took up residence in my heart, so many years ago, in London.

His smile and spirit are pure love. And when he married our precious girl from Edinburgh, dear Mary, it was a match made in heaven.

“You left us way too soon my little one. What a prince you are, such a magnificent soul.’

Another friend, who worked with Jaime at the NGO they were involved with, added: ‘Thank you so much for all the good memories and also for being my partner in crime who teaches Art of Living courses and runs the meditation center. ‘

Initial local reports indicated that the cause was a faulty gas refrigerator.

Well-placed sources said they were investigating the possibility that deadly carbon monoxide gas had been seeping out all night while the pair slept in the master bedroom before the alarm went off and they were discovered following an anguished call from a relative of Jaime’s.

Jaime described himself online as being from Madrid, although it is believed he moved to the UK with his parents as a child when they emigrated for work reasons, moving to Edinburgh about six years ago when he took a job as an investment risk analyst at Baillie. Gifford after several years in London.

Police in Mallorca have said little about Saturday’s tragedy, other than to confirm that it is still under investigation.

An investigating judge is charged with coordinating the investigation.

The latest tragedy came less than five months after a similar tragedy claimed the lives of a British couple in their expat home in Mallorca.

Michael Rowan, 62, and his partner, 56, Sharon Price, were found lifeless on December 19 last year in their country house near the picturesque town of Selva, about an hour’s drive from Cala Mesquida, after their worried son from the United Kingdom Kingdom someone to go around and check on them.

A subsequent autopsy confirmed that they died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the farmhouse they had moved to the previous year.

Their bodies lay undiscovered for two days.

Local reports at the time linked the intoxication to a wood-burning stove leak through loose piping, which allowed toxic fumes to enter the room where it was installed.

The engine of a portable generator is said to have been kept inside the property, despite recommendations to keep these types of devices out, and is also believed to have produced the odorless and colorless gas responsible for the couple’s deaths.

The nearest town to Cala Mesquida, famous for its beautiful sandy beach and popular with Germans and Brits, is Capdepera, about five miles away.

The house where the latest gas leak tragedy occurred is described as a rural property.

Unconfirmed local reports say it belongs to the dead man’s father.

Art of Living, which Jaime and Mary have been involved with for years from their base in Edinburgh, was founded by Indian yoga guru and spiritual leader Ravi Shankar.

It describes itself on its UK website as an organization founded in 1981 to help people relieve stress and anxiety through tools such as breathing techniques, social initiatives, meditation and yoga.

It operates as a non-profit, educational and humanitarian organization in more than 150 countries around the world.
