Former NFL running back Peyton Hillis’ kidneys have become a concern for doctors as he remains in critical condition in a Florida intensive care unit following last week’s swimming accident.
Hillis reportedly rescued his two children from drowning on a Pensacola beach on Wednesday, but was airlifted to a local hospital with lung and kidney damage as a result. Since then, the other issues have improved, while his kidneys remain a concern, according to Memphis-based WREG.com.
The WREG reporter was told that Hillis is “struggling and definitely needs as many prayers as she can get,” according to an article on the website. It’s unclear who offered the reporter that update.
A prayer vigil was held Sunday in Hillis’s native Arkansas. Hillis has volunteered as an assistant coach on his son’s team. Both that son, Orry, and Hillis’s young daughter were uninjured in the swimming accident.

‘One of the best things about being a body of believers is the relationship and the community, and it’s about not just being here to pray for people, but also being here, also being here to support them in times like this.’ Bryant Davis, Hillis’ football team coach, said Little Rock CBS affiliate.
“It was not a surprise to hear that Peyton jumped in the water after her son and that she pulled him to safety and that he was fine, and that she risked her life,” a mother on the team, Kelsey Eursery, told CBS. “And at this point, we’re just praying that’s not what it’s going to cost him.”
“That’s living sacrificially,” coach Jordan Wright added. That is disinterest. It’s going out and risking it to save your children. I mean, that’s amazing.
Photos from the scene show a helicopter and two ambulances rushed to the scene on Wednesday. Another adult was also rushed to the hospital, according to TMZ.
