A family’s pet hen has laid a ‘one in a billion’ perfectly spherical egg – that it hopes could now sell for almost £500.
Annabel Mulcahy was shocked when she discovered the ‘weird’ round egg at her home in West Oxfordshire on Saturday morning.
The hen responsible for laying the odds-beating egg is a rescue called Twinskie, who was named by one of Ms Mulcahy’s daughters.
Annabel Mulcahy and her family (pictured) were astonished to find on Saturday morning that one of their rescue hens had laid a ‘one in a billion’ spherical egg
Hen Twinskie – named by one of Ms Mulcahy’s daughters – was responsible for laying the perfectly round beauty
Ms Mulcahy has kept chickens for the last 20 years with the family, who live in Brize Norton, rescuing more in recent years as the children took a keen interest.
She said: ‘I opened the box and it was there, a perfect circle.
‘I googled and it was quoted that it’s a one in a billion. It’s weird,’
Ms Mulcahy added that she did a ‘double-take’ and that the egg is so perfectly rounded she is able to roll it on the table ‘like a marble’, the Oxford Mail reported.
Ms Mulcahy has put the egg up for sale on eBay saying she has seen some go for £480 in the past and she hopes to buy an extra run with the money so she can rescue more chickens
She took a picture of the marble-like marvel beside oval eggs to show how different it looks.
The stunningly spherical egg is not going to be eaten as Ms Mulcahy has put it up for sale on eBay.
She said she has seen some round eggs go for as much as £480 in the past and hopes to buy an extra run with the money so she can rescue more chickens.
She added: ‘They’re so friendly. If I’m in the garden, they’ll come and sunbathe at your feet.
‘Twinskie has the nickname Labrador because she’ll follow you around.’
The family have rescued more chickens in recent years as Ms Mulcahy’s children took a keen interest in the birds
