Friends to lovers is a story as old as time, both on the big screen, in TV series and in books.

But does it really work in the long run, and what happens when it’s not your favorite celebrity you see in a movie, and instead your best friend in real life?

Reddit users are now sharing their own experiences of what it was like to sleep with their best friends, and it’s a unique situation that’s being met with mixed reviews.

The question was asked on the website this week r/AskReddit subreddit by a user who asked point blank, “People who slept with their best friend, what happened?”

The post received more than 5,000 comments from several people who had slept with their best friend – and while some ended up getting married, others ended up ruining the friendship forever.

‘Actually like a movie, a Halloween party. I’ve always had feelings for her. Spin the bottle – go in the closet – kiss – find out they’re my best friend – have a fun night – pretend nothing happened – that couldn’t – started dating – fast forward five years, married with a newborn,’ wrote one person.

Another shared a similar story, to write‘After a cat-and-mouse game that lasted years… We have been very happily married together for eight years, ten years now.’

‘I married him 12 years ago now and wouldn’t change a thing. He is still my best friend and father of my wonderful children,’ someone else typed.

One Reddit user explained‘We tried to just be friends, but eventually it became too much and we ended up dating. We have been together for almost eight years and married since April 2022. She’s still my best friend, too.’

Others, however, were not so lucky.

‘I drunkenly slept with a friend and me like an idiot, trying to explain my feelings about it via text. That turned into an essay, and I regret everything about that night… I probably haven’t spoken to her in a year or so… I still cringe at how damn stupid I am/was…,’ they wrote.

Another one Reddit commenter shared, ‘She told me I had to move out of the flat and she never spoke to me again. We were best friends for years and did everything together. One stupid night where I drank way too much destroyed that friendship very quickly…’

“I hated them for taking advantage of the situation/me. It made me hate everything about them and ruined the friendship second person confessed.

Some users reported successful stories, including marrying their best friends, while others experienced breakups and even divorce

Someone else claimed‘It was great and we got married a year later. We were together for eight years and married for seven. Six of those years were great until he turned into a gaslighting, manipulative, narcissistic cheater. Now we are separated and I hope I never see him again.’

The viral Reddit post comes after therapist Taylor Palmby revealed her ‘game-changing’ tip that will help you reframe your mindset when dating.

She shared the tip on TikTok, explaining: “We don’t say ‘I like this person’ or ‘I love this person’ until we’ve been on a significant number of dates with them.

Instead, the therapist advised people to say they were “curious” about the person, because you don’t want to immediately convince your brain that they are always nice, funny, or caring.
