Peloton is recalling more than two million of their exercise bikes after issuing a warning that the bicycle seatpost could break and cause users to fall.
About 2.2 million of the bike model PL01, the original Peloton bike, is being recalled and users are being urged to stop using them immediately.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 35 reports of people falling off their $1,400 bikes due to a faulty seat.
This has resulted in 13 reported injuries, including a broken wrist, cuts and bruises.
More than 2 million of the bikes are to be recalled and users are asked to stop using them immediately
The company enjoyed huge popularity during the pandemic, but has struggled to recover since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted
In a statement, the company said, “In coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Peloton today announced a voluntary recall of the original Peloton bicycle sold in the U.S. from January 2018 to May 2023.
The seatpost may break unexpectedly during use, posing a potential fall and injury risk.
“We identified 35 reports of seatpost breakage out of 2,160,000 units sold in the US, as of April 30, 2023.
“There is no impact on Peloton Bike+ members, nor owners of original Peloton bicycles in the UK, Germany and Australia.
The original Peloton Bike model can be identified by the model number PL-01 on the label on the inside of the front fork (near the flywheel), the red “P” logo followed by the white-colored brand name “Peloton” on the The frame of the bicycle and the non-rotatable display.
“Our commitment to member safety is unwavering. It was important to Peloton to proactively engage the CPSC to address this issue and work quickly and cooperatively to find a solution.
Peloton is offering all owners of original Peloton bicycles a free, updated seatpost that can be installed at home, with no service call required. One seat post replacement is offered per bicycle.
This latest recall comes just a few months after the company agreed to pay out $19 million as a civil penalty.
Peloton knowingly failed to immediately report that their Tread+ treadmill contained a defect that could pose a significant product risk.
The civil fine also settles allegations that Peloton knowingly distributed recalled treadmills in violation of the Consumer Product Safety Act.
This latest recall comes as Peloton struggles to turn its business around after it surged in popularity and enjoyed high sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, a child was killed in an accident involving their treadmill, causing stocks to fall.
In October 2020, Peloton issued a voluntary pedal recall for 27,000 of its bicycles after consumers reported pedals breaking off and causing more than a dozen injuries, including some requiring stitches.
