Palia’s Lunar New Year event is a big fan of Maji Market

A new Palia update is underway and builds on the Maji market. The Luna New Year update makes the previous festival space more vibrant and busy, with new activities, rewards, recipes and quests. It’s a much beefier version of the previous Maji Market event, and it shows how developer Singularity Six is iterating and expanding on the existing world.

Palia is a life simulator game set in the cozy Kilima Valley, where there is an idyllic settlement of elf-like people called Majiri. The Valley is disturbed when the player wakes up. They represent the return of humanity, a species that once built a vast civilization before disappearing in some sort of magical cataclysm. As a newcomer to Kilima Valley, the player will have the opportunity to build his own house, cook, hunt, fish and befriend his new neighbors.

The Maji Market is a night market that lasted for a limited time last year. The original Maji Market mission event could be completed in a few minutes; then players returned only to participate in the Chapaa Chase to earn event tickets and receive new rewards. The Chapaa Chase returns with the Luna New Year event, but it’s no longer the only attraction.

The Luna New Year iteration on the market will be much more substantial, with three core mission lines. There are also two new activities. One is painting a ribbon to represent a desire and pinning the ribbon to the wish tree so that wish will hopefully come true the next day. The other spins Zeki’s prize wheel and collects a small treat.

The most interesting addition is the Hotpot card game. Four players gather around a communal hotpot to play a mahjong-style game, where tiles represent each ingredient of a tasty hotpot. It’s semi-competitive, but the pace of the game is pretty chill – it’s something that’s perfect for playing while lounging in Discord with friends.

By participating in activities, players are rewarded with Lucky Envelopes, an event currency that can be exchanged for Luna New Year rewards that players can place around their plot. Players can also purchase new ingredients such as bok choy and green onion, as well as seeds to plant their own supply of new vegetables, and tasty recipes that call for these ingredients. There is also the option to just relax and watch the fireworks.

The Luna New Year Maji Market is expected to go live on January 30 and close on February 27. Palia is free to play on PC and Nintendo Switch.
