Paige Thorne has revealed that the real reason she went on Love Island was because her fiancé broke off their engagement by text.

The reality star, 25, said she was “heartbroken” by the surprise split and became “depressed.”

She explained that she found out that her ex was on Tinder within a week of the breakup and decided to sign up for the ITV reality show in return.

Speaking to Vicky Pattison on her podcast The Secret To, Paige said, “The real reason I went on Love Island is the most narrow-minded reason you’ve ever heard of Vick, you’re going to cry.

“I’ll give you the short version, I won’t bore you well, I was in a relationship with this man for 18 months, it was a Tinder date and ended in an engagement.

‘[…] anyway, one day he texted me like “I’m breaking up with you”, out of the blue, and I was like, okay, we’re supposed to get married, but whatever.

“I was heartbroken and, when I say heartbroken, I went to seven stones like, I was depressed.

“And then I found out he was on Tinder within a week and I was just like you little bastard. Right, if you can do Tinder, guess what, I can do Love Island. So, fuck off. And that’s what I did.’

She went on to argue that “wifey material” was no longer the compliment it once was, saying, “You know what else I learned so apparently “wifey material” is just the code for “mug.”

“Apparently my wife material in this day and age means we’re going to do her over anyway.”

She stated that she would remain single for “a very, very long time” after a string of failed romances, including with fellow islander Adam Collard who allegedly cheated on her.

Paige said, ‘I swore I’ll be single for a very, very long time Vicky, very much! It’s not for me anymore. […] I’ve had three failed relationships in a year and we’re only in October.’

When she started her time in the villa, she said she had to hold back on certain points.

She recalled, “I remember the reconnection in Love Island. That was peace for me. I was cool, calm and collected, I wasn’t like that inside, it took me a lot of effort.

“I could have gone crazy, I wanted to go crazy, and I was like just don’t, don’t, don’t.”

Paige was paired with Jacques O’Neill on the show, before Jacques left the island for his sanity.

But before he left, Jacques had flirted and kissed other girls during the infamous Casa Amor episodes, tarnishing his relationship with Paige.

About her decision to walk away from him, Paige said, “I thought, if I don’t stop now, I know I’m going to fall really hard and I won’t be able to get myself out of it.

She revealed that the couple has been in touch since the show, adding, “We’re on good terms.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Vicky asked Paige about her mental health, admitting she was going through “a very dark time.”

She said, “That’s a question that doesn’t get asked a lot, are you okay?” It really doesn’t matter.

“I’ve been going through a really rough time since I first came out and everything was going great, it was going well, and then of course I’ve had all this stuff in the press and, frankly, it’s a really dark time .

She added: “But I feel like I’ve now gone through my dark time and got myself out of it.”

Paige also spoke about returning to her career as a paramedic after leaving the villa.

She said, “You know what, it’s been really easy up until now. So WAS is the Welsh Admin Service I work for, for the NHS. They were so supportive […] they have literally been amazing with me.

“When I go to do my paramedic stuff, it’s literally like nothing has changed, I haven’t been on TV, I’m still the same paramedic I’ve always been and I love that, it’s like I have time.

“It’s like you’ve never been away and nobody treats you differently. Then I can get out the next day and do a little shoot in Milan.’

She added: “Some of the scenes I’ve seen, they really stick with you and it’s just heartbreaking to see how COVID has just completely destroyed people, but hopefully we as a country will come out of this from the other end.”
