Oscars nominations 2024: Cillian Murphy, Carey Mulligan and Emily Blunt lead the British and Irish stars receiving nods – but who were the surprise snubs?

Cillian Murphy, Carey Mulligan and Emily Blunt led the British and Irish stars and received an Oscar nomination ahead of this year’s Academy Awards.

The Oppenheimer actor, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in 2024, is also hoping to take home the Oscar after being nominated in the same category.

Irish star Cillian’s performance received critical acclaim for his role in the Christopher Nolan-directed film and was strongly tipped to receive an Oscar nod.

Cillian – who was predicted to face fellow countryman Barry Keoghan – will face no competition from the actor as he missed out on a nod.

However, he will resist Bradley Cooper (master), Colman Domingo (Rustin(

Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) and Jeffrey Wright (American fiction).

Also in consideration for one of the top talents is Carey Mulligan, who received a Best Actress nod for her role in Maestro, as Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre in Maestro.

She will be confronted Annette Bening (Nyad), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Huller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Emma Stone (Poor Things).

Carey, who has been nominated for an Oscar twice before for Promising Young Woman (2021) and An Education (2010), will hope he gets lucky for the third time.

Meanwhile, British actress Emily has been nominated for Oppenheimer as the title character’s wife, Katherine ‘Kitty’ Oppenheimer, in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Another Brit who got a nod on Tuesday afternoon was award-winning songwriter Mark Ronson, who wrote Barbie’s I’m Just Ken.

He will compete against Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?, also from Barbie

as well as The Fire Inside by Flamin’ Hot, It never went away from American Symphony and Wahzazhe (A Song for My People) by Killers of the Flower Moon.

British-American filmmakers Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Glazer are nominated for Best Director for Oppenheimer and The Zone Of Interest respectively.

Christopher has been nominated for five Oscars in the past for his films Momento, Inception, Dunkirk, but has never won.

While it was a big night for these stars, there were several surprising comments about actors expected to receive nominations from the Academy.

There had been a lot of buzz surrounding Saltburn star Barry Keoghan at the Oscars, but the Irish actor didn’t get the coveted nod.

Despite being nominated for both the Grammys and the Golden Globes, Dua Lipa’s original song, Dance The Night, did not suffer the same fate at the Oscars.

Her Barbie song missed out on a nomination, but two other songs from the soundtrack (I’m Just Ken and What Was I Made For) made the shortlist.

The nominees were revealed by Atlanta star Zazie Beetz and The Boys actor Jack Quaid.

Also up for one of the top talents is Carey Mulligan, who has received a Best Actress nod for her role in Maestro, as Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre in Maestro

Carey, who has already been nominated for an Oscar twice before for Promising Young Woman (2021) and An Education (2010), hopes to be lucky for the third time

After a tumultuous film year marred by strikes and work stoppages, the Academy Awards delivered nominations for Nolan’s blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer, which earned thirteen nominations.

Nolan’s three-hour opus, seen as a Best Picture frontrunner, received a Best Picture nod; Nolan’s direction; acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt; and several awards for the craft.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie wasn’t far behind with eight nominations, including nods for best picture; Ryan Gosling for Best Supporting Actor; and two candidates for best song in What Was I Made For and I’m Just Ken. But Gerwig was surprisingly left out of the field of best directors.

Both Martin Scorsese’s Osage epic Killers of the Flower Moon and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Frankenstein riff Poor Things were also widely celebrated. Poor Things received 11 nods, while Killers of the Moon was nominated for 10 Oscars.

Lily Gladstone, star of Killers of the Flower Moon, became the first Native American nominated for best actress. Scorsese was nominated for best director for the tenth time. However, Leonardo DiCaprio was left out of the best actor category.

Despite being nominated for both the Grammys and the Golden Globes, Dua Lipa’s original song, Dance The Night, did not suffer the same fate at the Oscars.

These four contenders made for a maximalist quartet of Oscar heavyweights. Nolan’s extended biopic. Gerwig is almost musical. Scorsese’s pitch-black western. Lanthimos’ lushly designed fantasy.

Each film used a wide spectrum of cinematic tools to tell big, often disturbing stories on the big screen. And every film – even Apple’s biggest budgeted film to date, Killers of the Flower Moon – had robust theatrical releases that saved streaming months down the line.

The 10 films nominated for best picture were: Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers, Maestro, American Fiction, Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.

The nominees for best actress are: Annette Bening, Nyad Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon; Sandra Hüller, Anatomy of a Fall; Carey Mulligan, Master; Emma Stone, Poor Things
