Oceanside Pier in San Diego is consumed by huge fire, forcing visitors to evacuate 1954-foot long structure that’s longest pier on West Coast

Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire that broke out on San Diego’s historic Oceanside Pier.

The fire was reported around 3:00 PM PT in the vacant building that previously housed Ruby’s Diner on the pier. CBS8.

“The Oceanside Fire Department is currently battling a fire at the Oceanside Pier. We ask all citizens to stay away from the immediate area,” the fire brigade said.

Photos and videos show a plume of smoke rising from the wooden structure as crews work to light the flames.

“Restaurants at the end of the pier were damaged, as was the end of the pier,” the city of Oceanside said.

The City of Oceanside spent $5.5 million in 2023 to upgrade the piping and electrical systems on the pier.

Originally built in 1888, the pier was destroyed twice during its lifetime: once in 1890 by rough seas and again in 1902.

The current pier, which is 600 meters long, was built in 1987.
