Scientists investigating a mysterious boat-shaped formation high in the mountains of Turkey have done just that discovered new clues that Noah’s Ark might be buried beneath it.
An international team investigating the Durupınar Formation near Mount Ararat discovered unusually high carbon levels in soil collected within its feature perimeter.
Tests showed that the carbon content in the formation was higher than in the corresponding soil collected just a few meters away on the same hill.
Researchers said the difference could indicate a concentration of organic material, possibly the remains of old wood, although no wood was recovered.
“The amount of carbon coming from the interior of the ship is 40 percent higher than what was found outside,” said lead archaeologist Dr. Cenker Atila.
‘This raises the idea that organic material or wood residues may be present.’
New radar scans also revealed subsurface anomalies that intersect at right angles, possibly indicating voids or structural divisions beneath the surface.
The formation lies about 30 kilometers south of Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest mountain, and has fueled speculation about Noah’s Ark since it was identified in aerial photographs in 1959.

According to Biblical measurements, the ark was “300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high,” approximately 550 feet long, 80 feet wide, and 55 feet high.

While many scientists claim the formation is a naturally occurring geological feature, others are convinced it points to something far more extraordinary.
The international team of researchers working on the site firmly believe in the latter.

The researchers added further investigation using infrared thermography (IRT), a heat-sensing technology that can reveal hidden structures beneath the ground, and also suggested the presence of a ship-shaped hull buried deep in the ground.
Researchers have collected approximately 1,000 soil samples, which are being analyzed to determine whether the high carbon levels come from environmental processes or concentrations of organic matter, including decomposed wood.
Independent researcher Andrew Jones, who is part of the team, has been working at the Durupınar Formation since 2019, using ground-penetrating radar to see more than six meters below the surface.
Jones told the Daily Mail that a major development in the investigation was the discovery of other soil in the mysterious formation.
Inside, the soil is less alkaline, contains more organic matter and contains more potassium, which you would expect from rotting wood, such as an old wooden boat, which lowers the pH and adds carbon and potassium, Jones said.

The radar captured “a series of right angles” about six meters deep, which researchers believe could be the chambers that housed animals on the ark.
“Tests show that the chance of them being random is less than five percent, giving 95 percent certainty that something like a decaying wooden ship is the cause,” says Jones.
Earlier this month, the team announced that a new radar survey had discovered strong subsurface anomalies and several layers within the 150-meter-long formation, challenging the idea that it is one homogeneous boulder.
Led by Dr. Khosrow Bakhtar, the investigation used BakhtarRadar, a specialized imaging system developed by U.S. Air Force research, to probe deeper beneath the site than previous scans.

“My team and I carefully evaluate the collected subsurface data, which helps plan the core drilling pattern to be carried out at the site,” says Bakhtar.
“We will use BakhtarRadar’s unique ability to instantly distinguish any surviving fossilized human-worked wood from its natural host formation and its varying mineralogy.”
Jones said the deeper measurements processed so far had yet to reveal a clear boundary between the formation and the underlying bedrock.
The team is still analyzing the data and will use the results to select locations for core drilling that can determine what lies beneath the formation.
“We believe the Durupınar Formation is the remains of Noah’s Ark, and that is exactly why we want to subject it to the strongest scientific tests we can,” Jones said.
However, the researchers acknowledged that the results are preliminary and that radar anomalies alone do not prove that the formation has an archaeological origin.
